MAD - The Art of Scent 1889-2012 exhibition. The perfect Christmas gift!

What a Christmas gift! 

This first of its kind historical catalogue, for  MAD exhibition is a beautiful limited edition coffret box featuring eleven of the works exhibited in the inaugural show of the MAD Department of Olfactory Art. Each of the eleven scents are contained in printed glass vials and accompanied by a soft cover book of eleven essays which places each of the eleven works in historical context. The catalogue is written by exhibition curator Chandler Burr.

This limited numbered edition catalogue is available exclusively at the MAD Store and online.

Modern Italian Perfumery: Meo Fusciuni. Perfumaria Italiana Moderna: Meo Fusciuni

 

Meo Fusciuni. Provavelmente ainda não ouviram falar desta nova linha de perfumes. Mas garanto que quem esta por trás da marca é o perfumista italiano (ou deveria dizer “siciliano”) muito sorridente, carismático, jovem e talentoso, Giuseppe Imprezzabile. Aliás, Giuseppe não gosta de ser chamado de perfumista, mas sim, de “aromatario”. Ele é formado em farmácia e técnicas herbais, não em perfumaria. Mas há controvérsias, sendo que algumas pessoas da indústria do perfume já estão o considerando um dos melhores “perfumistas” da perfumaria moderna italiana. Ele também se considera um poeta e através da arte da perfumaria expressa suas emoções.  Sua primeira coleção criada em 2009 é feita de ingredientes naturais e foi inspirada em suas viagens a Istambul, Marrocos e Sicilia. E seu último lançamento de 2012 se chama “Notturno”.

Conheci Giuseppe em Florença na exposição Pitti Fragranze este ano. Aliás, devo um pedido de desculpa a Giuseppe. Fiquei de encontrá-lo no final da exposição para levar as amostras de seus perfumes e acabei não indo pois voltamos para França mais cedo do que planejamos. Então aqui vai: “Giuseppe, desculpe por não ter te encontrado no Domingo no final da exposição para levar seus “testers”!!! Foi muita generosidade de sua parte oferecer.” Mas o aroma de seus quatro perfumes estão em minha memória. Principalmente Notturno.

Quanto aos seus quatro perfumes todos unisex e disponíveis em EDT e EDP:

1# nota di viaggio (rites de passage): Dedicado a Istambul, é uma fragrância chipre composta de notas cítricas, pimenta, notas florais e base de pachuli, incenso, sândalo, vetiver e benjoim.

2# nota di viaggio (shukran): Este é dedicado a Marrocos, é bastante fresco e aromático com notas de hortelã e tabaco.

3# nota di viaggio (ciavuru d’amuri): Já este é inspirado na Sicilia. Com notas de figo, jasmim e incenso.

Notturno: Este perfume é especial, intenso, denso. Tem caráter próprio, estilo. Nasceu na noite e da noite se alimenta com suas notas contrastantes de rum, um pouco adocicado de frutas e flores brancas para depois se transformar em um impecável quente, seco, amadeirado.

A arte de cada perfumista independente como Giuseppe deve cada vez mais ser apreciada e respeitada, pois por trás de suas criações está a verdadeira arte da perfumaria. Criações que vem da alma e paixão de cada artista e não de um GC (gás cromatografia). Criações que nascem livres para voar, sem restrições de um briefing. Criações que só respeitam uma opinião: a do seu próprio criador. 

E para meus leitores, tenho o maior prazer toda vez que posso apresentar um destes artistas que fazem da perfumaria, uma arte.

Meo Fusciuni. Probably you have not heard of this new line of perfumes yet. But I guarantee that who is behind the brand is an Italian perfumer (or should I say "Sicilian") smiley, charismatic, young and talented, Giuseppe Imprezzabile. Interesting enough, Giuseppe does not like being called a perfumer, but instead, an "Aromatario." He graduated in pharmacy and herbal techniques, not in perfumery. But there is controversy, because some people from the perfumery industry are already considering him one of the best "noses" of modern Italian perfumery. He also considers himself a poet and through the art of perfumery he can express his emotions. His first collection created in 2009 is made from natural ingredients and was inspired by his travels to Istanbul, Morocco and Sicily. And his last release in 2012 is called "Notturno".

I met Giuseppe in Florence at Pitti Fragranze exhibition this year. By the way, I own Giuseppe an apology. I was supposed to meet him at the end of the exhibition to bring with me some samples of his perfumes home but I did not. I ended up leaving back to France earlier than expected. So here goes: "Giuseppe, sorry for not meeting you on Sunday at the end of the exhibition to get the “testers". It was very generous of you to offer them. "But the scent of his four fragrances is in my memory. Mainly Notturno.

As for its four unisex scents, available in EDT and EDP:

1 # note di viaggio (rites de passage): Dedicated to Istanbul, is a chypre fragrance composed of citrus notes, pepper, floral notes and base of patchouli, incense, sandalwood, vetiver and benzoin.

2 # note di viaggio (shukran): This is dedicated to Morocco, is very fresh and aromatic with notes of mint and tobacco.

3 # note di viaggio (ciavuru d'amuri): Inspired in Sicily. Notes of fig, jasmine and incense.

Notturno: This perfume is especially intense, dense. It has its own character, style. Born in the night and from the night it feeds itself with its contrasting notes of rum, sweetness from fruits and white flowers. At the end, it turns into a flawless warm, dry, woody.

The art of each independent perfumer such as Giuseppe must increasingly appreciated and respected, because behind their creations is the true art of perfumery. Creations that come from the soul and passion of each artist and not from a GC (gas chromatography). Creations that are born free to fly without restrictions of a briefing. Creations that only respect one opinion: the creator's.

And to my readers, I have great pleasure every time I introduce one of these artists that make perfumery an art.

The magical soil of Grasse. Grasse, terra fértil!

 

O melhor de estar em Grasse enquanto estudo perfumaria é poder entrar diretamente em contato com uma das principais fontes de inspiração da mesma: a natureza. Outro dia mesmo uma amiga minha também perfumista me traz estas pequenas florzinhas que colheu no caminho da minha casa e pede para eu cheirar. “Umm, cheira a damasco, bastante frutado... conheço este cheiro” falei. Ela então me revela, que era Osmanthus, um pequeno arbusto ou mini árvore, nativa da Asia que produz estas pequeninas florzinhas, meio amareladas e extremamente aromáticas. Delas, se extrai óleo absoluto de Osmanthus para perfumaria. Passei nesta mesma rua indo para o supermercado e percebi o cheiro novamente, olhei para o lado e lá estavam, na calçada, entre carros e pedestres, várias arvorezinhas de Osmanthus. Como se não bastasse, ao lado delas, também se encontram arbustos do verdadeiro jasmim de Grasse, com seu cheiro suntuoso, imponente e doce. Tudo ali, ao alcance dos nossos narizes. Tem mais, nesta mesma rua, descobri o aroma suave e alaranjado da verdadeira flor de laranjeira. Já no caminho para escola que passo todos os dias, encontro pimenta-rosa, eucalipto, rosas, figueiras e madressilva. Assim, conhecendo o aroma real destas maravilhosas plantas e flores, fica bem melhor (mas não mais fácil) de reconstituir estes cheiros na perfumaria.

Além de termos disponíveis tantas plantas e flores em Grasse, também tivemos o privilégio de visitar as plantações de Rosas de Maio e de Jasmim exclusivas para a Chanel como parte de nossa educação em perfumaria. Como a estação é de Jasmim agora, outro dia fomos visitar a colheita e após, a produção do concreto de Jasmim. 

Para se ter uma ideia de quantidade, é necessário colher uma tonelada de flor de Jasmim para se obter somente 2.5kg de concreto do mesmo. Por isso é um material que chega a ser mais caro que o ouro. As flores precisam ser colhidas pela parte da manhã e foi isso que acompanhamos naquela linda manhã de sol.

No mesmo dia, a noite, tivemos otro privilégio: o de colher a Tuberosa, também conhecida como Angélica no Brasil. É uma planta bulbosa de flores brancas. 

Suas folhas são longas, estreitas e de cor verde e as flores são serosas, pequenas, de cor branca ou levemente rosada e liberam um delicioso e intenso perfume à noite. Por isso as colhemos durante a noite. Foi bem divertido.

Ah e o perfume... algo doce, cremoso, leitoso, opulento, uma delícia. Um dos perfumes mais famosos de Tuberosa é o Fracas de Robert Piguet. O absoluto de Tuberosa também, assim como o Jasmim, é um material caro em perfumaria devido a grande quantidade de flores necessárias para se extrair o óleo.

Enfim, Grasse é assim. Aqui acredito que crescem plantas e flores até em concreto!!! Impressionante.

The best thing of living in Grasse while studying perfumery is to be able to get directly in touch with one of the main sources of inspiration of perfumers: the nature. The other day a friend of mine, also perfumer, brought me these small flowers that she picked from a street next to my house and asked me to smell it. "Umm, smells of apricot, very fruity ... I know that smell, "I said. Then she tells me that it was Osmanthus, a small shrub or mini tree, native to Asia that produces these tiny flowers, half yellow and extremely aromatic. From them, it’s extracted the Osmanthus absolute for perfumery. I went to this same street to go to the supermarket and noticed the smell again, I looked to the side and there they were, on the sidewalk, between cars and pedestrians, several Osmanthus trees. If nothing else, beside them, I can also find in the same spot, the true jasmine of Grasse, with its sumptuous smell, sweet and a bit animalic. Everything there, to the reach of our noses. There's more, at this same street, I also discovered the sweet orangey aroma of true orange blossom. Walking to the school every day, I can find pink pepper, eucalyptus, rose, fig and honeysuckle, just to name a few. Thus, by knowing the real scent of these wonderful plants and flowers, is much better (but not easy) to reconstitute these smells in perfumery.

In addition to having so many plants and flowers available in Grasse, I also had the privilege of visiting as part of our education in perfumery, the exclusive Chanel May Roses and Jasmine fields. Since the Jasmine season is now, we visited the other day and after harvesting, we saw the production of Jasmine concrete. To get an idea of ​​quantity, it is necessary to collect a ton of Jasmine flower to obtain only 2.5kg concrete of Jasmine. So it's a material that gets to be more expensive than gold. The flowers must be harvested by the morning and that’s what we followed on that beautiful sunny morning.

On the same day, at night, we were lucky enough to have the chance to harvest Tuberose, also known as Angelica in Brazil. It is a bulbous plant with white flowers. Its leaves are long, narrow and green and the flowers are serous, small, white or slightly pink and release an intense perfume at night. That’s why the harvest is overnight. It was really fun. Oh, and the scent ... something sweet, creamy, milky, rich, delicious. One of the most famous fragrances around Tuberose is Fracas by Robert Piguet. The absolute of Tuberose also, like Jasmine, is an expensive material in perfumery because of the large number of flowers needed to extract the oil.

Anyway, that is Grasse. Here, I believe that plants and flowers can grow even on concrete!! Impressive.
